Franklin Templeton Investments has hired Martin Currie’s Andrew Ness as a portfolio manager on the Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust (Temit).

Ness (pictured) will work alongside Temit lead portfolio manager Chetan Sehgal, who replaced Carlos Hardenberg following his sudden departure in Q1. Hardenberg is now a partner in emerging markets boutique Mobius Capital Partners, alongside former Franklin Templeton colleagues Mark Mobius and Greg Konieczny.

The appointment means Temit now has a UK-based portfolio manager. Ness, who joins on 17 September, will be based in Edinburgh, while Sehgal is based in Singapore.

Franklin Templeton said Ness will in time be named as a portfolio manager on additional global emerging markets strategies.

Martin Currie last week announced Ness, a senior member of its global emerging markets equity team since 2010, would be replaced by former global equity manager Paul Sloane.

Prior to this role, Ness held similar roles for Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP) and Deutsche Asset Management, having begun his investment career at Murray Johnstone in 1994.

In the new role he will report to Manraj Sekhon, CIO for emerging market equities.

Sekhon said Ness had a long-term track record of outperformance.

“The needs of our clients in emerging markets investing continue to evolve as does the investment landscape,” he said.

Ness said he looked forward to joining the team at an interesting time in the growth and development of emerging markets.

Meanwhile, this year, Temit has undergone significant changes with the departure of Mark Mobius and Carlos Hardenberg.
