A look at adviser activity on the Square Mile Academy of Funds website in the first quarter of 2015, revealed that capital preservation remains top of mind, with the number of searches on that topic rising to 34% of the total, from 30% in the previous three months. Income is the other major focus, accounting for around 30% of searches.

Within the income space stalwarts such as the Schroder Income Maximiser Fund, Newton Global Income, Artemis Global Income and the Woodford Equity Income Fund remain popular, writes Square Mile MD,

Richard Romer-Lee, “Other names are beginning to emerge in this area, with Premier’s Multi Asset Distribution and Multi Asset Monthly Income funds performing well, alongside the Goldman Sachs Global Strategic Income Bond Portfolio again as well as the Aviva Investors Property Trust.

The interest in the Premier fund, Romer-Lee said, accounted for much of the move higher in the number of multi-asset searches performed on the site, which now account for 20% of the total.

But, he added: “The big difference in Q115 compared to Q414 has been the big jump in interest in the Mixed Investment 20-60% Shares sector. This now leads the IA sector table, pushing the Mixed Investment 40-85%, which was second in the most viewed sectors in Q414, right down the rankings for Q115. This can be explained in the main by the high viewings of the Investec Cautious Managed Fund and perhaps advisers looking more broadly for solutions-based, managed funds for their clients.”

The other significant move was the increase in interest in the global emerging market funds which rose 4.8% to 7.9% of the total, making it the fourth most viewed sector, after Mixed Investment 20%-60% shares, UK All Companies and Sterling Strategic Bonds.
